The NHLPA announced that 14 players have elected for salary arbitration.
Beck Malenstyn, who the Capitals dealt to the Buffalo Sabres for a second-round draft pick last weekend, is one of the 14 restricted free agents who decided to do so.
NHL Players opting for salary arbitration
Jake Christiansen (Columbus Blue Jackets)
Connor Dewar (Toronto Maple Leafs)
Jack Drury (Carolina Hurricanes)
Ty Emberson (San Jose Sharks)
Jet Greaves (Columbus Blue Jackets)
Ryan Lindgren (New York Rangers)
Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (Buffalo Sabres)
Beck Malenstyn (Buffalo Sabres)
Kirill Marchenko (Columbus Blue Jackets)
J.J. Moser (Tampa Bay Lightning)
Martin Necas (Carolina Hurricanes)
Spencer Stastney (Nashville Predators)
Joe Veleno (Detroit Red Wings)
Oliver Wahlstrom (New York Islanders)
If the player and the club that owns their rights cannot come to terms on a contract before a hearing set for sometime between July 20 and August 4, a neutral ruling arbitrator will decide how much they will make during the 2024-25 campaign.
To qualify for arbitration, a player must meet the years of professional experience required which differs based on what age they were when they signed their first NHL contract. The league determines a “year of professional experience” as 10 or more NHL games in a season for players that signed as 18-20 year-olds and 10 or more professional games in any pro league for players 21-24.
Friday at 5 pm was the deadline for player-elected arbitration. Teams have until Saturday to opt for club-elected arbitration.
Outside of Malenstyn, the biggest name that jumps off the list is Carolina’s Martin Necas. Necas is a 25-year-old, former 70-point player that the Hurricanes have been trying to trade since the offseason began.
PuckPedia notes that a player filing for arbitration is no longer eligible to sign an offer sheet with another team. Teams will also receive a second buyout window if they have a player file for arbitration.
After an arbitration case is settled, the team will get a 48-hour window to buy out players with a cap hit of $4 million or more who were with the team at the last trade deadline.
