Washington Capitals general manager Brian MacLellan has made few friends this offseason. His most polarizing decision came earlier in the summer when the Capitals bought the popular salary cap website, CapFriendly. In a recent interview, MacLellan admitted, “I don’t think anybody’s happy. The whole industry is not very happy about it.”
Saturday, MacLellan brought more pain to those around him when he traded for Vegas Golden Knights goaltender Logan Thompson at the 2024 NHL Draft. The event was hosted by Vegas and held at the Sphere where many Golden Knights fans were in attendance.
Video of the trade being announced at the venue was taken by Inside The Rink’s Conrad Jack.
After the NHL’s new trade/goal horn sounded, the news was revealed to those in attendance. The crowd could be heard gasping in horror. One fan could even be heard yelling incredulously, “WHAT?”
“The #VegasBorn crowd was NOT happy!” Jack observed on X.
What made things even more awkward was that Thompson was conducting an autograph signing at the draft… as a member of the Vegas Golden Knights.
“Yeah, it’s weird,” Thompson said in an interview with the press afterward.
But this is Brian MacLellan during the 2024 offseason. He’s got that dawg back in him.
He’s making aggressive trades. He’s taking down your favorite websites. He’s trading for your favorite goaltender in your own venue. And your feelings? He appears to care none for them.
