Martin Fehervary was named Slovakia’s player of the game in their 6-3 World Championship quarterfinals defeat to Team Canada on Thursday morning.
The Washington Capitals’ top-pairing defender received a game-high 22:57 of ice time and had a plus-minus of minus-two in the loss. Fehervary played nearly half of the first period (8:40).
For his efforts, Fehervary was awarded a Tissot watch at center ice.
Slovakia was eliminated after winning four of their seven group-stage games. One of the wins came in overtime over a US team featuring Capitals top prospect Ryan Leonard.
Fehervary averaged the most ice time per game of any Slovakian player in the tournament (19:41) and put up two points (1g, 1a) in eight games. The 24-year-old blueliner was the first Capitals player to declare for this year’s games, his fourth time playing in the senior international tournament.
The Capitals still have representation in the tournament through Leonard and goaltender Charlie Lindgren. Their quarterfinal matchup for Team USA against Czechia gets underway later on Thursday.
Canada now moves on to the semifinals to play Switzerland who eliminated Germany in their quarterfinal game. The Canadians have made the semifinals for nine straight tournaments.
