Zac Funk named a finalist for ‘WHL Player of the Year’

Washington Capitals prospect Zac Funk is up for a big award after his incredible 2023-24 regular season.

Funk was chosen as the BC Division’s nominee for the WHL Player of the Year on Thursday. The winner of the “Four Broncos Memorial Trophy” is set to be announced on May 9.

Funk exploded this season for a CHL-leading 67 goals in 68 games to go along with a career-best 56 assists. His 123 points ranked second in the league and he was one of just two players in Canada’s three major junior leagues to eclipse the 120-point mark.

Funk’s 67 goals are the new, all-time franchise-high for the Cougars, besting a record set by Quinn Hancock (54) back during the 1997-98 WHL season. Additionally, he recorded eight hat tricks after coming into the year with zero in his career.

Funk has continued to score in the playoffs, putting up eight points (3g, 5a) for the Cougars in a four-game sweep of the Spokane Chiefs. He is tied for the league lead in postseason scoring.

The Capitals announced they signed Funk to a three-year, entry-level contract in early March. He was also selected to the WHL’s first All-Star team last week and is expected to join up with the AHL’s Hershey Bears potentially as soon as his junior season is done this year.
