Maybe Alex Ovechkin is a softie after all?
The Washington Capitals captain recently did a video interview with Men’s Journal. The magazine asked Ovechkin several great questions, including why Ovi wears yellow laces, how many goals is expected of him per season, and who has the smelliest hockey equipment.
Ovechkin also revealed the last time he cried (watching The Notebook) and revealed he still plays Candy Crush.
What do you do that drives your wife crazy?
Alex Ovechkin: “I think the crazy thing Nastya, my wife, hates about me is when I always on my phone and play some games on there. When I go to sleep, I always try to play (on my) phone. I think she hates that most.
“Clash of Clans, Candy Crush, like all of those games. I’m not addicted, I just like video games. Every time when we on a road trip, I try to get my Xbox with me just to play video games.”
When was the last time you cried?
Alex Ovechkin: “The last time I cried was when we watched movie The Notebook. I was not like cry cry, but, you know, when it comes here [points to throat]. I was looking at Nastya like my wife’s crying. I was like, ok. If you go, I have to do something. Don’t think about it.”
Who has the smelliest hockey equipment?
Alex Ovechkin: “I think the goalies. They sweat a lot in the practice, in the games. I think the goalies. Holts, Sammy. I think they smell bad.”
Who in the NHL has impressed you the most?
Alex Ovechkin: “It’s a couple actually of them. Jaromir Jagr, obviously, he played when he was 70, he’s still playing. Joe Thornton. Zdeno Chara. Like they almost 40-years-old right now and still playing. And still shows good hockey and that’s impressive.”
How often do you get a haircut?
Alex Ovechkin: “I get haircuts every two months and it cost $50.”
What is your favorite thing to do with your son?
Alex Ovechkin: “Play with him with the hockey sticks. He loves it. He love take a stick and put something on it, no matter if it falls. I’m always showing him how to handle the puck. He start smiling, happy. I give him the stick (to learn how to balance) and he falls and starts crying. It’s pretty funny.”
How many goals do you need a season to feel you did your job?
Alex Ovechkin: “40 goals?”
Why do you wear yellow laces?
Alex Ovechkin: “Because it’s me.”
