David Ayres became a national story when he lived his childhood dream in February. The emergency goaltender, who serves as the Toronto Marlies’ Zamboni driver, suited up for the Carolina Hurricanes after both of their goaltenders got hurt and beat the Leafs after making eight saves.
On Monday, Ayres, who sometimes would suit up in goal during Toronto Maple Leafs practices, shared his secrets.

“So there are two questions I got all the time the last month,” Ayres began. “First one, how do you prepare yourself for NHL shooters? Secondly, how does it feel to have Auston Matthews shoot on you all the time?” This is how.”
Ayres then took shots from what appears to be a Nerf gun. And he stopped all three shots!

Recently, David’s wife Sarah tweeted what her favorite moment was this season, but used Ovi’s 700th goal as a foil.
I’m going to go with Ovi’s 700th goal.
Juuuuust kidding.
It’s my freaking husband playing in his first NHL game. https://t.co/ePtTd7WqaL— 🇨🇦Sarah Ayres🇨🇦 (@35Ayres) March 16, 2020
I love this couple.
