After a whoopsie by John Carlson and a powerplay goal by Mikko Rantanen, the Capitals faced a 2-0 deficit going into the first intermission. The Capitals, who were blown out in their previous two games, had a heart-to-heart in the locker room. They responded by scoring three unanswered goals to come back and beat the Colorado Avalanche, one of the best teams in the league.
Nicklas Backstrom scored in the second while Tom Wilson and TJ Oshie added goals in the third period.
For Oshie, the deflection tally was his third-straight game with a goal.
Oshie’s goal was made possible by Nick Jensen who did a stutter step at the blue line before unleashing a shot on goal. Oshie somehow got his stick on the shot and deflected it past Philipp Grubauer.

“What Jens did there at the blue line, it created the whole goal,” Oshie said. “Hats off to him.”
The Osh Babe’s goal came with 2:04 remaining in the game. “I was fortunate it went in. I didn’t even know how much time was left,” Oshie said.
Oshie has recorded nine points (5g, 4a) in his last nine games. After the game, he declared it donut time.

The second-line right-wing was playing off a bet he recently won with his daughter Leni, where if he scored a goal she would give him a donut.
He did and the family visited Duck Donuts in Arlington, VA, for Teej to receive his winnings.
“Definitely as the game went on I felt our game kept building and was getting better in all areas,” Capitals head coach Todd Reirden said. “Obviously a lot of guys stepped up and I thought we played way more as a team. We were more connected and in sync tonight after two good days of practice. To pull out a win, coming from behind, it’s a big win for our team to start this road trip.”
