The bad game: numbers for the morning after

The Washington Capitals got mega-boomed by the Philadelphia Flyers in their worst game of the season to date. To make matters worse, Chris is out of town, so I’m gonna do the morning-after story. Here’s a bunch of depressing stats.

The Caps out-attempted the Flyers 38 to 37.

  • Oh god this sucks.
  • The Caps out-attempted the Flyers, tied in scoring chances (19 all), and nearly doubled up in high-danger chances (13 to 7), but that probably doesn’t do justice to Washington’s defensive failures. Look at all those goals from the slot above.
  • In all situations, Philadelphia earned 2.5 expected goals to Washington’s 1.8. It was a throttling.
  • One Caps player had a positive on-ice goal differential: TJ Oshie. He was plus-1. Tom WIlson was minus-3. So much for those line flips.
  • The usually excellent fourth line got caved in, getting one shot attempt for every two Philly got. Leipsic and Hathaway had literally no individual five-on-five offense.
  • That’s only one less than Alex Ovechkin, who had one miss. (He had some more looks during the power play.)
  • Braden Holtby‘s .720 all-situation save percentage was not the worst of his season. He gave up four goals on eleven shots to Boston earlier this season (.636) and, oh yeah, that .000 game we won’t talk about.
  • What a mess. Burn the tape. Burn other things too. We’ll talk about that later.
  • Chris, come home. I miss you. I need you.
