Alex Ovechkin has been voted into the 2020 All-Star Game and will be the Metropolitan Division All-Star’s captain. This year’s All-Star Weekend will be held in St. Louis.
The NHL announced the news shortly after 8 PM.
The ageless Ovechkin is having another excellent year. Coming into tonight’s game against the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Russian forward has 35 points in 36 games, including 22 goals which rank him third in the league.
Ovechkin has played in seven career All-Star Games (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018) and been voted captain four times total. Last year, he opted to miss the All-Star Game to rest after winning the Stanley Cup the year before.

The other captains are David Pastrnak (Atlantic Division), Nathan MacKinnon (Central Division), and Connor McDavid (Pacific Division).

NEW YORK (December 21, 2019) – Boston Bruins right wing David Pastrnak (Atlantic), Colorado Avalanche center Nathan MacKinnon (Central), Washington Capitals left wing Alex Ovechkin (Metropolitan) and Edmonton Oilers center Connor McDavid (Pacific) topped their divisions in the 2020 NHL All-Star Fan Vote presented by adidas to earn the captaincies and first roster spots for the 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend, which will be held Jan. 24-25 in St. Louis.
Pastrnak made his All-Star debut last season in San Jose and will serve as a captain for the first time. MacKinnon is set to play in his third All-Star Game (also 2017 and 2018), earning a second consecutive nod as captain (he did not play in 2019). Ovechkin has played in seven prior All-Star Games (2007, 2008, 2009, 2011, 2015, 2017 and 2018) and has been voted captain of the Metropolitan Division for the third consecutive year and fourth time overall (he did not play in 2019). McDavid will be making his fourth consecutive and overall All-Star appearance, voted as Pacific Division captain each time.
From Nov. 30 – Dec. 20, fans worldwide were able to cast their votes via the NHL App and at NHL.com/Vote on interactive ballots available in 10 languages: English, French, Czech, Finnish, German, Mandarin, Russian, Slovak, Spanish and Swedish. Fans were permitted to select as few as one player and a maximum of four players per ballot, without regard to position. The maximum number of ballots cast per day for each user was 10.
The remaining players who will comprise the four All-Star rosters will be determined by the NHL’s Hockey Operations Department.
The 2020 Honda NHL All-Star Weekend will once again consist of a three-game tournament, played in a 3-on-3 format, featuring four teams – one for each NHL division. Each team will be made up of 11 players from the respective division: six forwards, three defensemen and two goaltenders.
The head coach of the team with the highest points percentage (points earned divided by total possible points) in each of the four divisions at the halfway point of the regular season will guide the respective All-Star rosters.
The Blues and the city of St. Louis will host the 2020 Honda NHL® All-Star Weekend, from Jan. 24‑25, including the 2020 NHL All-Star Skills™ on Friday, Jan. 24 (8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT, NBCSN, CBC, SN, TVAS) and the 2020 Honda NHL® All-Star Game on Saturday, Jan. 25 (8 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. CT, NBC, CBC, SN, TVAS). The 2020 Honda NHL® All-Star Weekend marks the third time NHL All-Star activities will take place in St. Louis. The Blues previously hosted the event in 1970 and 1988, both at St. Louis Arena.
