Before Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom played in their 900th game together, they sat down with NBCSW’s Joe Beninati to look back on their relationship over the years. The chemistry and camaraderie between the two were on full display.
The perennially underrated and understated Backstrom started the nostalgiac reflection in a blase way, saying he felt “like nothing has changed” in their on-ice relationship. “I feel like he’s a pure goalscorer, and I’m trying to give him the puck, so he makes my job easier.”

Backstrom and Ovechkin have shared a lot of great moments together. Like. A lot. Check out this montage:

All that being said, when Ovechkin was asked what their list of greatest moments would include (other than raising the Stanley Cup together), he focused on the little things.
“Obviously, spend time with Nicky every day, see how he’s working hard in practice every day,” Ovechkin said. “He’s always first guy in the gym, last guy out of the gym. You know, see his professionalism out there, it’s tremendous. I’m learning a lot from him.”
Backstrom pulled Ovechkin in for a hug (not the first time they’ve done that this season!).

“I hope we’re going to have more time together in our future,” Ovechkin concluded.
