Love you, 900: Caps beat Devils 6-3

The Washington Capitals traveled to New Jersey to take on the Christmas clad Devils for the first time this season. It’s also the 900th game that Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom have played together on the Caps.

Kyle Palmieri slipped an early power play goal by Ilya Samsonov to kick things off. Alex Ovechkin from Nicklas Backstrom like clockwork. Backstrom put his own away only seconds later.

Blake Coleman tied the game on an odd man break to start the second frame and Nicky put home his second of the night to end said frame. John Carlson from Michal Kempny below the offensive zone dots. Jonas Siegenthaler with a snipe to extend the lead and Richard Panik added on. Devils got a garbage time goal.

Caps beat Devils 6-3!

  • The Caps domination of the Devils at even strength in the first period is something I don’t really remember seeing in recent times. Holy cow, it felt like the Devs had the puck maybe three times the entire period and they had two power plays.
  • Those two dudes again. Alex Ovechkin from Nicklas Backstrom to kick the Caps scoring off and then Nicky deflecting home a John Carlson wrister to give the good guys the lead. Stay forever and ever. Sign them to whatever they want.
  • Something that you probably did not know or expect. With his secondary assist on Kyle Palmieri‘s power play goal, P.K. Subban ended his 21-game pointless drought. Wow.

  • The second period was not so good. The Caps shouldn’t be getting torn open at five-on-five against a team like this as many times as they were. They recouped a bit of momentum towards the end with that fantastic, globe trotter type passing goal.
  • Puck was bouncing all over the place in this game. Ice was not great and that contributed to creating the odd man rush that New Jersey found their goal on in the second.
  • How on earth did Garnet Hathaway getting mauled by two Devils end up as four-on-four hockey? NHL refs have a gross obsession with “evening things up”. Ridiculous.
  • This bullet was going to be complaining about Richard Panik and suggesting a play for Justin Williams/Ilya Kovalchuk. He then scored a goal, making it look stupid. So…I changed it to this.

  • Caps scored early and often in the third and then just rode the clock for the rest of the game.
  • Congrats are in order for Nicky who with a four point night earned his 900th career point in the 900th game he has played with Ovi. Because of course he did.
  • Miles Wood loves to pick his spots against dudes that don’t normally get into rough stuff. He is always absolutely, utterly irritating whenever the Caps and Devils go at it.

We are right back at ya tomorrow with a fixture against the Tampa Bay Lightning and you get the pleasure of dealing with back-to-back recaps from yours truly.
