The Washington Capitals beat the Detroit Red Wings, but they were supposed to do that.
What wasn’t supposed to happen was Mike Green temporarily rejoining the Washington Capitals bench, by force, at the hands of Garnet Hathaway.
Late in the third period, with the Caps leading by one goal, Mike Green chased the puck through neutral ice. Hot on his heels was 6’2″, 220 lbs Garnet Hathaway. With a powerful hit, Hathaway dumped Green over the boards. Headfirst, Green landed in front of his former teammates, Alex Ovechkin and Tom Wilson.
