A meeting with the Montreal Canadiens awaited your Washington Capitals on Friday night. The Caps came into the festivities with an 8-0-1 record against Eastern Conference opposition. Could they stay undefeated in regulation against beasts from the East?
Phillip Danault opened the scoring in the second period after being left alone in front. Shea Weber blasted a slap shot about 600 miles per hour to give the Habs a two goal lead. Jordan Weal made it three and Nick Suzuki, four.
Alex Ovechkin got one back on the power play and Evgeny Kuznetsov put a second home on a breakaway. Tomas Tatar sealed it with an empty netter.
Canadiens beat Caps 5-2.
- The Caps came out looking like world beaters, getting behind the Habs defense multiple times in the first minute alone. That didn’t last very long as they sort of collapsed in the last twelve minutes, ending the period moderately in the negative in all my favorite five-on-five fancy stats.
- Both Ilya Samsonov and Carey Price were fantastic in the first period, with Price taking the first half of the period and Samsonov the second. Sammy in particular was using all sorts of parts on the rink to make some interesting saves.
- With Nic Dowd and Carl Hagelin out day-to-day with upper body injuries, Tyler Lewington was called up from Hershey to fill a spot in tonight’s lineup. He took shifts both as a fourth line wing and as one of the Caps seven defensemen. What an interesting assignment and one that Lewy said post game he hasn’t done since he was ten years old.

- I don’t think I remember a single extended shift from the Caps in the offensive zone in the second period. Yikes, that was ugly.
- Alex Ovechkin absolutely freight-trained Jonathan Drouin and the Caps blew the ensuing 4-on-2 advantage up ice. Only a few moments later, Drouin’s line (his spot filled by Tomas Tatar) cashed in with the first goal of the game.
- The Caps point streak has ended at 13 games. It was fun.
- Well, the rest of the post will be more fun. Here are some of your choices for what you’d have your home goal song be:
