Alex Ovechkin’s and John Carlson’s pregame cup checks have come out of the darkness of the tunnel and onto the ice for all of you to see.
Friday, during warmups of the Caps-Habs game, Carlson and Ovechkin did the superstition at the blue line.
Ovechkin speared Carlson in the jewels once, but it was after that tap that he knew he was game ready. Carlson gave Ovechkin three clangs to the chimes before he was ready to go.
The first time we learned of this bizarre superstition was in February 2018 after TSN posted raw footage of the Capitals in the tunnel before the game. The cup check went viral because it’s wonderfully dumb.
