Nic Dowd leaves game after suffering a laceration on his left hand

Nic Dowd cut his hand early in the third period after he caught a rut and slid hard into the end boards. Dowd tripped Matt Niskanen in the process. Not only did the fourth-line center receive a two-minute minor penalty (which ultimately he did not serve), he also, we’re guessing, got some stitches in the locker room.

After the game, Capitals coach Todd Reirden gave an update on Dowd.

“Upper body,” Reirden said. “He did end up coming back to the bench by the end of the game. We’re good there. He just needed to get some medical attention.” Reirden went on to explain that after Dowd missed a few shifts “the game was kind of in crunch time and I was going with the top guys a little bit more.” Dowd did not return to the game.
