Still sizzling via shootout: Caps beat Flyers 2-1

The homecoming of Radko Gudas and the roadcoming of Matt Niskanen featured two of the early season Metro Division bests in the Washington Capitals and Philadelphia Flyers. Who would win the battle of the offseason defenseman trade?

Brendan Leipsic slammed home a rebound in the crease to put the Caps up early. Claude Giroux tied the game in the third on the power play.

Shootout bullets!

  • Voracek did NOT put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Oshie put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Giroux put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Kuznetsov put the biscuit in the basket.
  • Couturier did NOT put the biscuit in the basket.

Caps beat Flyers 2-1!

  • Caps dominated the first period at even strength, jumping out to an early lead after an extended offensive zone shift from the fourth line. Would have liked to see the first power play of the evening not start the way it did, but other than that not really much to complain about with that road first period.
  • Radko Gudas was back in Philadelphia and the first thing he did was throw a big ole hip check on Carsen Twarynski. I heard two bangs on that play, which only means one thing…someone threw a changeup in Houston.
  • Matt Niskanen‘s first real action of the night came against the Caps top line. He immediately proceeded to get called for a holding penalty on TJ Oshie behind the net.

  • The second period was bad, y’all. The Caps scraped by with their lead due to some great puck luck and big ole saves from Braden Holtby. Not a great response to what was a great first period.
  • Joel Farabee‘s last name had me thinking Martin Fehervary was somewhere on the ice tonight. Too similar, we gotta change that.
  • The Caps power play looked entirely out of sync. Frustrating to watch to say the least and this time it really wasn’t even the zone entries as the main problem.
  • The boys had entered the evening scoring in 19 straight second periods. That streak ended as the Caps looked an utter mess especially in the neutral zone in the second frame.

  • Third period was very meh. Felt like the Caps were sluggish and non interested which is very bad in a tie game or one that you are only leading by one goal.
  • The Caps seem determined to hit the most posts in one season in the history of the NHL.
  • That missed slashing call on Tom Wilson‘s late chance was utterly ridiculous. Full on hack directly on the thumb right in the official’s face.

No Joe B tonight, so you get your Caps Pup tweet of the night. Look at Captain, would you just look at him.

The next one for the good guys comes back at home on Friday night against the Montreal Canadiens. It’s the first of a back-to-back with travel for the Caps.
