The Washington Capitals give out a hard hat after every game inside the locker room. The Nationals batting helmet is an individual honor for a player who does something important in the game that usually doesn’t show up in the score sheet. Martin Fehervary, Ilya Samsonov, and John Carlson are among the few who have won the award in the past this season.
Tuesday night in Calgary, Michal Kempny was given the hard hat from Braden Holtby. Kempny “worked his bag off all summer” to get back into the lineup after tearing his left hamstring and Holtby said he’s played great in the last two games.
As the Czech defenseman accepted the batting helmet, one teammate could be heard screaming ridiculous things in the background.

“Take your shirt off. Take your shirt off,” John Carlson said. “Come on, take it off.”
Another teammate can be heard saying, “Speech.” While another remarks that the batting helmet, or perhaps Kempny himself, “looks good.”
“Boys, huge win tonight,” Kempny says. “It means a lot to be back with you guys. Just keep it going and have fun.”
Erik Johnson: I cant believe our social media team treats us like pieces of meat
John Carlson: WHOOOO KEMPS TAKE YOUR SHIRT OFF WOOOOOOOO https://t.co/PkjsuGNfDV— momo (@mlrich4) October 23, 2019
This is not the first time Carlson has expressively shared his love for his partner on the first pairing and (I’m sorry, Tom and Braden and Carl) the most handsome dang guy on the team.
Let’s take a look at John’s recent comments on Kempny’s Instagram photos as an example.
This is a bromance worth cherishing.
