During the first intermission of every Capitals game, local youth hockey players take the ice and participate in a mites-on-ice game. It’s adorable. Everyone loves it.
Wednesday, the postgame interview became just as entertaining as the game. Jackson Friedlander scored two goals and afterward spoke to in-arena host Sandra Draganoiu as the prestigious Mite of the Nite.
Jackson was very precocious, very excited, and very open about his life.
When asked who his favorite player was, Jackson said it was Alex Ovechkin. Then he told the audience about his exotic pet.
“I have a tarantula named Michael,” Jackson said. “He just had two crickets on Monday and one on Sunday. He has a big appetite.”
So do I for the full transcript of this interview.

Jackson, you were on fire? How did it feel to play out there?
Jackson Friedlander: “All I wanted was to have some speed and have fun. Hockey, always remember, hockey is not about winning, it’s always about fun.”
Who’s your favorite Caps player?
Jackson Friedlander: “It’s Ovech-a-kin and I have a tarantula named Michael. He’s a curly hair. He just had two crickets on Monday and one on Sunday. He has a big appetite.”
You scored two goals out there.
Jackson Friedlander: “I’m so excited. I’m seriously excited. I’m kind of shy, but mostly excited. And courageous.”
What were you thinking when you were scoring those goals?
Jackson Friedlander: “All I wanted was shoot as hard as I can and go as fast as I can.”
Do you have anything you want to say to your fans out there? I think you’ve gained a lot of new fans out there.
Jackson Friedlander: “Yes, I know. Everybody. My hockey team, mom and dad, just I love you so much everybody. Please. Please God bless everybody.”
Never change, Jackson.
