The Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens 4-3 (SO) in their home opener on Thursday.
Despite being without captain Justin Williams, who is currently taking a break from the NHL, the Canes brought back their postgame team celebrations, nicknamed storm surges.

Dougie Hamilton went to center ice and began clapping overhead with the crowd. Then the entire Hurricanes squad skated down to the end of the ice and jumped into the boards.
Williams, a three-time Stanley Cup champion and former Capital, came up with the idea for the Hurricanes last season to galvanize the team and its fans. “Hockey is our life and job…but it is still a game,” Williams said. “Enjoy the good times and have fun with it…let’s celebrate more this year.”
The celebrations infuriated Hockey Night In Canada’s Don Cherry, who called the Hurricanes “a bunch of jerks”, an insult the organization rallied around with viral t-shirts.
