Philipp Grubauer leaves game for Team Germany with ‘muscle tweak,’ does not return

Tuesday, Philipp Grubauer dressed for his first game of the IIHF World Championship for Team Germany against France. Halfway through the match, Grubauer left the game and was replaced with backup goaltender Niklas Treutle.

TSN commentators during intermission reported that it was a “muscle tweak.”

Grubauer left the ice during a commercial time-out to give Teutle time to stretch.

Grubauer had surrendered only one goal to France’s Damien Fleury.

At the time of the goalie change, the score was 3-1, with Germany in the lead. With France’s goalie pulled Korbinian Holzer made if 4-1 with an empty-netter.

Grubauer arrived on Sunday and warmed up with the coaching staff on Monday.

He took his team photo and spoke with reporters Tuesday morning.

Germany remains undefeated through three games to take the lead of Group A, surrendering only three goals in that time. Their next game is Wednesday against Slovakia, who will be fighting for their spot in the quarterfinals.
