John Carlson became the fifth Capitals defenseman ever to hit 400 points. He was very surprised when the Caps honored him.

Capitals defenseman John Carlson accomplished a bit of history against the Carolina Hurricanes, Tuesday.

After receiving a secondary assist on Nicklas Backstrom’s empty-net goal, Carlson tallied his 400th career point (90g, 310a), becoming only the fifth defenseman in Capitals history to reach the mark.

The Capitals saluted Carly immediately following the goal on the jumbotron. The best part is he had no idea he even accomplished anything!

As the Capitals make the announcement and put John on the screen, Carlson and Oshie both look at each other quizzically. Oshie then rises to his feet and slams his stick on the boards as the defenseman tries to shield his face from the camera.

Carlson would wave to the crowd, but eventually, breaks down in laughter as I assume someone chirps him on the bench.

Carlson tallied two points on the night, including a third-period goal. The Stanley Cup champion has the fourth most points among defensemen in the NHL this season (67).
