Sidney Crosby passes Alex Ovechkin for 48th on the NHL’s all-time points list

Sidney Crosby had himself a game against the Montreal Canadiens, Saturday.

The Penguins captain registered points on four of the Penguins’ five goals. Three of Crosby’s four points came in the first nine minutes of the game. The Penguins routed the Canadiens, 5-1.

The four points moved Crosby into 48th place on the NHL’s all-time points list (1,199), passing — oh no… [puts on reading glasses] this can’t be rightAlex Ovechkin (1,197).

In 2007, Crosby led Ovechkin in total points after the stars’ first two seasons in the NHL (222-198). Since Ovechkin’s 112-point 2007-08 season, the Russian machine has led Crosby for much of the last 11 years. According to the NHL’s PR, the last time Crosby had more career points was January 5, 2011, a lead he held for three days until Ovechkin tallied two points on Jan. 8, 2011.

The superstar forward missed large swaths of games from 2010 through 2013 due to concussions.

Since the 2013-14 season, Crosby has averaged 89 points per season while Ovechkin has averaged 76, allowing him to catch up.

The Penguins center has 1,199 points in 926 games while Ovechkin has 1,197 in 1,067 outings for the Caps.

Crosby now has 10 points in his last four games, moving to fifth in the NHL in points this season with 84. Ovechkin ranks fourteenth with 74.

Crosby also scored his 440th career goal 21 seconds into the game, moving him past Jaromir Jagr for second on the Penguins’ all-time goals list.

Ovechkin will have a chance to pass Crosby again Sunday against the New York Rangers.
