Alex Ovechkin will play against Leafs on Wednesday, suspension to come in February

Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick in Washington’s spirit-sundering loss to San Jose, which extended their slump to six games. The Caps have just one game left before the all-star break, on Wednesday in Toronto, and Ovi says he’s playing in it.

Ovechkin previously announced his intention to skip the all-star game, forcing himself to serve a one-game suspension either in Toronto or against Calgary when the team returns to action on February 1. With his post-game statement, we now know Ovechkin intends to miss the Calgary game.

Head coach Todd Reirden confirmed the news.

Washington has lost six games in a row, dating back to January 12. On Wednesday they will face the Toronto Maple Leafs, who will be rested but nursing a two-game losing skid. The Caps will be tired, but they will have their captain and leading scorer in the lineup for their last chance to stop the bleeding before a long break.
