Frozen offense: Blue Jackets beat Caps 2-1

The Washington Capitals were back home for a snowy evening in the District for a date with the Columbus Blue Jackets. We got no Bob on the beat, but on Caps Kid’s Night the Blue Jackets still found a way to send the DC crowd home unhappy.

Cam Atkinson opened scoring with seemingly his 698th career goal against the Capitals alone. Both teams had nothing for you in the second. Evgeny Kuznetsov tied things up real late with the netminder pulled. Artemi Panarin with the OT winner.

Blue Jackets beat Caps 2-1 in overtime.

  • If that first period was any more disjointed and without flow it’d be the roads around the DMW tomorrow morning. The Caps got hemmed in their own zone for the first ten minutes or so, but eventually the game evened out and we were left with a rather boring mess through twenty minutes.
  • Something very concerning and very #offbrand is that Alex Ovechkin left the game with around eight minutes remaining in the first and did not return for the rest of the first frame.
  • But, we returned to being very #onbrand as the Capitals announced during the first intermission that Ovi would be returning to the game. Russian Machine Never Breaks.

  • The Caps were sorta better in the second, but couldn’t get anything past Joonas Korpisalo in net for the Blooj and got lucky that the Jackets couldn’t convert on another two breakaway attempts. Still an overall mess of a game through forty minutes.
  • More scary news on the injury front. Braden Holtby took a high stick to the eye hole of his mask from Cam Atkinson and had to leave the game midway through the second period. Pheonix Copley came on in relief and Holts did not return for the rest of the game.
  • Hey, am I the only one who could not care less about what the Georgetown Hoyas did today? All that means to me is that the ice was probably horrific and the scoreline tonight backs that up.
  • Brooks Orpik passed more to Columbus than Washington.

  • Go ahead and #FireErnie as well while you’re at it.
  • The Caps ramped things up in the third period as they looked for the game tying goal, but Korpisalo and his mates were able to preserve the shutout…until Evgeny Kuznetsov tied this bad boy up with the goaltender pulled.
  • Not too great of a night for the third line of Lars Eller, Brett Connolly, and Travis Boyd. They were on the ice at five-on-five for five high danger chances for the Jackets and contributed none themselves. Brian MacLellan said the other day that the only real trade he’s potentially considering is a hockey trade, salary for salary in the forward department. I think that is needed as well. Speculate freely.
  • Non-hockey related bullet time. Everyone do yourselves a favor and check out NXT UK Takeover: Blackpool if you’re a fan of professional wrestling. Fantastic show.
