Carolina Hurricanes bring back green jerseys, mascot Pucky the Whale, and goal song ‘Brass Bonaza’ for Whalers Night

The Harford Whalers was one of the most beloved teams in NHL history. Sunday, the Carolina Hurricanes paid homage to its franchise’s former iteration by celebrating Whalers Night at PNC Arena.

The Hurricanes pulled out all the stops to elicit as much Whalers nostalgia as possible. The Hurricanes photoshopped their current players into vintage hockey cards. PNC Arena was adorned with green Whalers signs. The organization brought back mascot Pucky the Whale. The team changed their goal song to Brass Bonanza. Carolina even wore the Whalers’ old green and blue jerseys.

Prior to this night, the color scheme was not used since April 13, 1997. The whole scene was a sight to behold.

Before the game, the Hurricanes published vintage hockey card designs of their current players. (See more designs here and here.)

PNC Arena had special decor for the evening.

The first 10k fans into the arena received this Whalers poster.

Hurricanes’ mascot Stormy worked with Pucky the Whale to get him back into game shape.

The Hurricanes twitter account took this beautiful wide-lens photo of the locker room featuring the team’s vintage green jerseys.

Goaltender Petr Mrazek rocked this specially designed Whalers mask.

Eventually, the Hurricanes took the ice in their new threads for warmups.

The Hurricanes released this hype video.

Former Whaler Mike Rogers dropped the ceremonial first puck and the game was on.

After falling behind 2-0 to the Bruins, Teuvo Teravainen finally scored for the Hurricanes, banking the puck off Charlie McAvoy in front of the net. The Hurricanes played the Whalers’ old goal song Brass Bonanza.

The Hurricanes would score four unanswered goals before the Bruins narrowed Carolina’s lead to one.

Teuvo Teravainen would score shorthanded to close the scoring 5-3.

After the game, the Hurricanes celebrated with another surge, falling to the ice in the shape of a whale (I think?). Of course Pucky joined the players out on the ice.

All in all, it was a fun night.
