Shutout for the North Pole native: Caps destroy Senators 4-0

The Washington Capitals rode their sleighs north of the border to face the Ottawa Senators for their last game before Christmas break.

Were the Senators naughty or nice guests? Brett Connolly got the Caps on the board first 92 seconds into the game with a beautiful redirect. Before the first was over, Matt Niskanen converted on a three-on-two break redirecting a Nicklas Backstrom shot home. In the second period, Jakub Vrana forced a turnover and scored a beautiful unassisted goal. Michal Kempny would end the scoring with a flukey redirect.

Caps win 4-0. This marks Pheonix Copley’s first career shutout!

  • First things first, AHL veteran Tyler Lewington made his NHL debut Saturday against the Senators. Lewington’s family was in attendance in Ottawa. The 2014 seventh-round pick has played 204 career games with Hershey. Todd Reirden recently said that he would reward hard-workers in Hershey with a game in the NHL so they could say they played in the big leagues. This is such a great move.
  • Jonas Siegenthaler’s second career assist was a beautiful lob shot to the net. Brett Connolly somehow got the blade of his stick on the puck. It’s Connolly’s eighth goal in 35 games this season. He’s on pace to set a new career high for a second straight season.
  • Jakub Vrana continued his sensational second full season in the NHL with his 11th goal this season. Vrana stole the puck in the offensive zone and went down Broadway for the beautiful breakaway goal. Vrana’s only two off his career high of 13 goals that he set last season.
  • V can’t put the iPad down though.

  • Someone grabbed Tom Wilson by the collar and he didn’t fight the guy. This is remarkable restraint for Tom. Goob job, Tom.
  • I took the entire week off next week so that I could do a special project for RMNB. It’s going to be awesome. Cara came over so we could start it.

Joe B Suit of the Night

Well, that was pure domination. God, Ottawa’s bad.

The Capitals will now have four days off until their next game next Thursday. Merry Christmas everybody!
