Max Scherzer went to the Capitals-Red Wings game. He threw his hat on the ice after Alex Ovechkin scored a hat trick.

Three-time Cy Young award-winner Max Scherzer was at Capital One Arena Tuesday night. He saw quite a hockey game.

Alex Ovechkin scored his 21st career hat trick, leading the Capitals to a 6-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings.

Scherzer, sitting in the lower bowl, knew exactly what to do after Ovi scored goal number three. The Nationals pitcher chucked his hat on the ice.

The moment was captured by NBC Sports Washington reporter Al Koken.

Scherzer, sitting with his wife Erica, tossed a Wizards’ “The District” hat he had been wearing throughout the game.

Fans, such as Gene Wu and his son Marcus, even got a photo with the Nats pitcher.

But don’t you worry. After Max threw his hat, he was given another one: A Capitals snapback!

“Did you notice Scherzer’s new hat? He tossed one for Ovi and got a new one,” Craig Laughlin pointed out.

“Again. Professional athletes like free stuff,” Joe Beninati joked. “So do analysts!”
