Halfway through the first period of Wednesday night’s game against the Winnipeg Jets, center Evgeny Kuznetsov was elbowed in the head by forward Brandon Tanev.
Tanev was penalized for an illegal hit to the head. Kuznetsov played one more shift on the resulting power play but soon headed to the Capitals locker room. He did not return.
The injury happened with 8:32 left in the first period, as Kuznetsov and Tanev met in the neutral zone.
Tanev, 6’0″, 180 lbs, appears to lift his elbow to head level in anticipation of contact with Kuznetsov.
The first-line center looked dazed and uncomfortable after the hit, though he played one more minute-long shift.
Kuznetsov did not return to the game and will be re-evaluated by the trainers Thursday.
#Caps Evgeny Kuznetsov (upper body) will not return and will be re-evaluated tomorrow.
