Almost every time Alex Ovechkin scores now, he accomplishes a bit of history in the process. And his goal Monday night against the Edmonton Oilers was no different.
After scoring a second-period power-play tally on Cam Talbot, Ovechkin tied Hockey Hall of Famer Marcel Dionne in career PPGs.
Ovechkin now sits eighth in NHL history with 234 goals on the man advantage. Yet, postgame, he was not very impressed with himself.
Ovechkin’s goal came at 13:09 of the second period and closed the game’s scoring. As Evgeny Kuznetsov slid the puck to John Carlson at the point, the Caps’ top scoring defenseman unleashed a shot. The attempt was blocked by an Oilers’ defenseman but went directly to the worst person possible. From his office, Ovechkin one-timed the rebound past Cam Talbot for his 11th goal in 13 games this season.
After the game, the Russian machine was asked about tying Dionne and he had this to say.

“It’s pretty cool,” Ovechkin said.
“Yep,” he added, raising his eyebrows. The press corps laughed; Ovechkin smiled.
“All right, guys.”
He walked away.
Ovechkin does it in just career game #1015, while Dionne's 234th & final PP goal came in his 1332nd career game (with the Rangers on Dec 3, 1988 at the Canucks) https://t.co/Rv23dcUxGo

Scoring in a 4-2 @Capitals win vs the Oilers tonight, Alex Ovechkin tied Marcel Dionne for the 8th most career PP goals in NHL history (234- now 2 shy of Mario Lemieux for 7th)

Five of Ovechkin’s 11 goals this season have come on the power play and the Capitals captain only trails Evgeny Kuznetsov (6) for the team lead.
Ovechkin’s next major accomplishment will be when he scores career goal number 625. That will tie Ovechkin (618) with Joe Sakic and Jarome Iginla for 15th all-time in goals.
