The Washington Capitals made three more cuts on Saturday morning in a continuing effort to get down to the NHL’s 23-player roster limit.
Shane Gersich, who played in two games during the Caps’ Stanley Cup playoff run, was sent to AHL Hershey. Meanwhile, Riley Barber and Liam O’Brien were put on waivers with the intent of being sent down. All three players were among the team’s most consistent and dangerous forwards in the preseason.

The three cuts leave the Capitals, going into their final game of the preseason on Sunday (Blues, 3 pm) with 26 players left in training camp.

Roster

The Capitals are carrying the two goaltenders they will be bringing into the season, Braden Holtby and Pheonix Copley, but they still have extra forwards and defensemen, depending on the health of Michal Kempny (day-to-day) and Travis Boyd (week-to-week) on October 2.
Jayson Megna is the likely forward candidate to be sent down, while defenseman Aaron Ness will likely begin the season in Hershey too. That leaves Madison Bowey and Jonas Siegenthaler as the players fighting for the last remaining roster spot. Siegenthaler can be sent down while Bowey must pass through waivers, likely giving him the edge.
