Creative hockey fan uses makeup to design tributes to NHL teams

Shey Junqueira is a die-hard Panthers fan, podcaster, and journalism student. Like many hockey fans, she “always end[s] up making things that aren’t about hockey, about hockey in some way.” This offseason, she decided to combine two seemingly unrelated passions: hockey and makeup.

With the support of her all-female hockey podcast “For Pucks Sake,” she started creating and sharing complex makeup designs for all 31 NHL teams. She has been posting one look every day, counting down to the start of the regular season.

Most of the 31 looks focus on the teams’ icons or themes. Dripping oil for Edmonton, shark teeth and fins for San Jose, and actual fire for Calgary. (She literally almost brought the house down with that one.)

She did a special tribute to the Capitals in honor of their Stanley Cup win, and plans to do another look for them during the regular season.

Her one non-team look was a tribute to the Karlsson’s antibullying charity, “Can’t Dim My Light.”

From Shey:

[H]ockey and makeup are both things I’m completely obsessed with. I always end up making things that aren’t about hockey, about hockey in some way. Likewise, I’m always looking for an excuse to play around with makeup so the two interests were bound to collide.

Mostly I just really love that they’re not things that would traditionally go together and playing around with that juxtaposition.

[The Capitals look is] the only look that celebrates the team’s accomplishments of this year because I love the Caps. I think their Cup was well deserved and a long time coming, and I wanted to celebrate that in case, y’know, anyone somehow forgot that they’re our STANLEY CUP CHAMPIONS.

The three stars are meant to represent the stars on the Capitals logo. I included glitter in every bit because I wanted it to be as shiny as the cup was when they won it.

[T]he team that’s been the hardest to do so far though has been the Anaheim Ducks just because it was something I’d never done before and it had to do a lot with trying to get the perspectives to all line up right.

(I did that one while working in a closet surrounded by boxes and sitting on a pile of clothes.)

[T]he Winnipeg Jets one and the New Jersey Devils ones have had the hardest clean up after. I used a thick grease paint for the hair for the Winnipeg whiteout tribute and it didn’t come out for DAYS no matter how many times I washed my it. It just completely coated my hair and left this thick sticky white cast.

As for the Devils one, I’m still finding red makeup in odd places.

My personal favorite has been the looks I did for the Florida Panthers.

I’m a South Florida girl, a huge Panthers fan and I put a lot of love into those.

…I’m most excited about the one I have planned for the Detroit Red Wings! There are still quite a few that I haven’t settled on a concept though, so I’m always open to hearing the ideas of the fans who love those teams and want to see something that’ll really represent them well.

I just love hockey and each look is a tribute of sorts.
