Caps attempt to identify their teammates in Stanley Cup day guessing game, mostly fail

The Washington Capitals celebrated their Stanley Cup win in epic style. While many of the players joined their teammates to celebrate their Cup days together, not all of the Capitals kept up on each others’ activities – despite a chattier than usual team chat room, according to Tom Wilson.

Darren Haynes, a sportscaster with WUSA9, visited the Capitals during Training Camp and played a guessing game with Alex Ovechkin, TJ Oshie, and Braden Holtby. The premise was this. Haynes showed the players pictures of their teammates, obscured and silhouetted, with the Stanley Cup and asked them to identify who was in the photo.

The result was local sports TV magic.

First, the iconic picture of Alex Ovechkin holding the Stanley Cup aloft in the middle of Red Square was not as simple as one might think. Holtby and Oshie both failed to identify their captain.

Here’s how the guesses went.

Braden Holtby: Kempny?
TJ Oshie: Kemper?
Braden Holtby: Lars?
TJ Oshie: V?
Braden Holtby: Vrana?
Alex Ovechkin: Me!

🤦‍♀️

Next, Holtby spent a painfully long time trying to guess the photo of Ovechkin doing his iconic Cup stand, even after some prodding by Haynes.

Darren Haynes: Keg stand. Out of the Cup.
Braden Holtby: I mean we all did that.

The photo of Oshie drinking beer through his flipped-up jersey, however, was easy. Finally, an easy one.

Braden Holtby: That’s TJ, obviously. Yeah, that’s an easy one. The rest of us can’t do that.
TJ Oshie: I was so unsure what I was going to do when I got up there.

Oshie did correctly identify Holtby and his sister standing next to the Stanley Cup though the fedora and being on a farm were a bit of a giveaway.

When he got it right, Oshie proudly proclaimed, “I know my teammates!”

(…we’re not so sure.)

Ovechkin, of course, answered every question correctly.

“I’m pro,” he said with a shrug and a smile. “I’m pro.”
