After a night full of partying, the Stanley Cup champion Washington Capitals arrived back at Dulles Airpot around 5 PM.
Alex Ovechkin and Nicklas Backstrom were the first to deplane, holding up their new championship trophy for all to see.
It was a beautiful moment of loyalty, camaraderie, respect, and perseverance – well, that is until they almost dropped the Cup down the stairway.
Ovechkin held up the Cup with two hands until he shifted the weight over to Backstrom and Whoops!
Oopsie daisy!
The problem appears to be that Backstrom was trying to hold the cup up with his injured right hand. Backstrom suffered the injury during the second round of the postseason which caused him to miss a chunk of games.
When the Capitals arrived at Dulles, they also received a water cannon salute from fire department.
