In search of 50 goals, Alex Ovechkin scores number 48 on second shift of game

Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin appears to already have his seventh Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy locked up. That’s great, but Ovechkin needs a hat trick tonight against the New Jersey Devils to tally his eighth 50-goal season. He wants it!

Saturday against the New Jersey Devils, Ovechkin came out firing and struck paydirt early.

During his second shift of the game, Ovi scored his 48th goal of the season on a sensational one timer from the faceoff circle. After Tom Wilson backhanded a pass to Evgeny Kuznetsov, the Russian center skated the puck into the zone and curled on the wing. Kuzy then sent a beautiful cross-ice pass to Ovechkin hiding on the dot.

Ovechkin beat Cory Schneider, who went to the splits to try and make the save.

The goal was Ovechkin’s 606th of his career. He’s now on a three-game goal scoring streak.

Ovechkin finished the first period with four shot attempts.

During the first intermission, Nicklas Backstrom spoke to Al Koken about Ovi’s impressive first period.
