One night after arguably the best goal of the season was scored by Sidney Crosby, Cam Ward scored maybe the strangest goal of the season. On, um, himself.
Thursday night, Cam Ward summarized the goaltending of the 2017-18 Carolina Hurricanes in a single play.
The Coyotes dumped the puck in, so Ward skated behind the net to get possession. The puck somehow got lodged in Ward’s skate blade, but he did not notice.
Ward, panicking at having lost sight of the puck, skated back to protect his crease. And that’s where, yup, he put the puck over the goal line.
Hey, wait a second!

The goal happened 8:27 in the first period and narrowed the Hurricanes’ lead to 2-1.
In a grand act of charity by the scorekeeper, Alex Goligoski got credit for the goal. The NHL website calls it a deflection, which, sure, yeah, you could call it that.
