Mike Green is in the final year of a three-year, $18 million contract, but the pending unrestricted free agent may not finish the season in Detroit. With the Red Wings likely to be sellers at the trade deadline, the team could deal the veteran defenseman to a playoff team and start collecting picks and prospects for a rebuild.
The Capitals, who are in need of help on the backline, have been rumored to have interest in a MG52 reunion. Alex Ovechkin even floated this quote during All-Star Weekend: “It’s nice if [Green] would be back in Washington, but I don’t know if it’s possible or not so we’ll see.”
Adding another wrinkle to a possible reunion is the news that Green bought a home in Washington DC over the offseason. The family has been renting a place during their time in Detroit.
Green’s wife Courtney posted a photo of the family posing in front of their DC row house in September. Green is shown holding up their adorable son Axel. According to city public records, the home cost $1.33 million.
“Mike, Axel and I are beyond excited to turn our 1914 row house into a home with the help of this bright light and beautiful mind, @jeremiahbrent,” Courtney wrote. “Let the transformation begin!”
Courtney also told a commenter that “[w]e won’t be living there full time until Mike retires, but in the mean time we’ll be visiting as often as possible.”
The fixer-upper is in the Kalorama Triangle neighborhood. The Obamas, as well as Jared and Ivanka Trump, live in the nearby Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood. The home is also located right by Rock Creek Park and close to the National Zoo.
Before moving to Detroit in 2015, Green sold his McLean, Virginia home located in Franklin Park for $2.8 million.
