We had on our hands a battle atop the Metro Division with the victor taking sole ownership of that renowned peak. Within that battle was another matchup between two Vezina capable goaltenders, a return of a beloved Swedish soldier, and the last game of a tumultuous, but still fun, 2017.
Tom Wilson got things started with a goal in tight, then Christian Djoos continued the Caps hot start with another tally, but John Moore would cool things off with one of his own.
John Carlson slapped home a bomb on the power play to extend the lead to two once more. Matt Niskanen added another. Zajac would edge the Devils closer before a Backstrom empty netter.
Caps beat Devils 5-2!
- The Caps now hold first in the Metropolitan Division. Hey, that’s familiar.
- A lot of good stuff going on with the first Capitals goal. Strong D-to-D pass from John Carlson, net drive from Brett Connolly to take away two defenders, shimmy and shake from Christian Djoos, and a nice finish from Tom Wilson.
- A lot of good stuff going on with the second Capitals goal. Great outlet pass by Devante Smith-Pelly, smart joining of the rush by Djoos, a cross-ice seed of a pass from Alex Ovechkin, and another cross-ice pass from Nicklas Backstrom to Djoos who slammed home the toe of the tic-tac-toe.
- I could probably repeat this bullet for the other two goals. The Caps passing was on point all game. We got to see some pretty hockey.

- Welcome back Marcus Johansson! The long time Capitals forward returned to the District for his first regular season game against his former club. Mojo had a great night, tallying two assists and being his normal solid, smooth skating self. Miss ya 90!
Still melts my heart, that adorable pass from mojo. Good times. Kiss worthy. https://t.co/uAm4aMrd4j

- Speaking of Swedes who had nice nights, Djoos was doing his thing and doing it real well in the first period. His goal and assist in the first gave him the second multi-point game of his career.
- John Carlson continues to rack up points. His three on Saturday night gave him 31 overall and put him second behind John Klingberg for the defensemen scoring lead.

- I normally complain at length about Smith-Pelly being in the top six, but he was everywhere Saturday night tallying ten individual shot attempts and an assist to boot. His two linemates Backstrom and Ovechkin also grabbed a combined total of one goal and five assists.
- Three goals and three assists from defensemen. You don’t lose many games when that happens.
- The C team was your recap friends tonight, with Ian in Hershey and Peter away from technology until 2018.
- What’s your favorite Caps moment or just general hockey moment from 2017? Lemme know in the comments below.
We really should be the C team because of our names, but that grade doesn't match our true talents.
