With hockey being such a global sport, players’ names can be hard to spell and sometimes even harder to pronounce.
In a new video, Buzzfeed had a few sports fans sit down and try to spell players names. Among the last name challenges was the Capitals very own Alex O-V-E-C-H-K-I-N. You would think his last name would be easy to spell. You would be wrong.
The fans being quizzed had to write their guess on a white board. If they got the spelling wrong, an ice cube was dropped down the back of their shirt.
Let’s review the spelling.
Player 1: Jonathan Toews
Guesses: Toews, Taows, Tayves, Toews
Results: 2/4
Player 2: Alex Ovechkin
Guesses: Ovechkin, Ovechkin, Ovetchkin, Ovejchken
Results: 2/4
Player 3: Jaromír Jágr
Guesses: Jagr, Jagr, Jagr, Jagor, Jager
Results: 3/5
Player 4: Shayne Gostisbehere
Guesses: Goetisbehre, Gostisper, Jostesbert, Gostisbere, Gossdisbaer
Results: 0/5
Silly, sports fans. Gostisbehere’s last name is spelled 👻 + 🐻.
Overall, this was not too bad. Please notice, the women got almost all of the spellings correct.
The most important part of the video is a comment one fan made after spelling Ovechkin. “I put an exclamation point because that’s how I feel his playing style is.”
Yes. You are VERY correct.
