Karl Alzner made national headlines more than five years ago when his dogs tore up his house after a triple overtime playoff game.
Now, Karl and wife Mandy are introducing two of their troublemakers to Montreal Canadiens fans in a feature called Habs’ Best Friend.
The video begins with Karl trying to get his two wiener dogs riled up.
“Get the leaves,” Karl says as tosses foliage into the air. “Get the leaves. GRRRRR.”
Murphy, a 9-year-old dachshund, takes after his papa by being “the sporty, energetic one of the two.” Meanwhile Charlie, 8, enjoys his time snuggling on the couch with his parents.
“Charlie is the lover, lap dog – likes to cuddle and kiss,” Karl says.
Karl also admits to being the bad cop, often penalizing the dogs.
“I’d say I discipline them more,” Karl says. “They definitely go to Mandy when they need some loving. I think they like me pretty good.”
But it seems like not only is the tough love warranted, it’s necessary.
Charlie and Murphy are famous from their episodes while living in Washington, DC. First, the two little trouble makers escaped their crates and were caught on camera. The crating, however, was due to the two trashing the Alzner’s home after Game Three against the New York Rangers in 2012 went to triple overtime.
The dogs are trained and Karl gives credit to Mandy for her tireless work… on Murphy.
“[Mandy] is the trainer,” Karl says. “She spends more time with them than I do obviously at home. She did everything with Murph. She taught him everything. We hoped Murph would teach Charlie but it didn’t work out that way.”
While Murphy can do tricks, he struggles with simple things like eating correctly.
“What’s funny is Charlie’s like pretty much like all normal dogs and chews his food,” Karl says. “Whereas Murphy is one of the select few who just swallows it. So he doesn’t chew anything. He won’t chew on his food, treats, toys so he’s got pretty bad breath because he has tartar. All the vets always say get him something to chew on, try these bones, this and that. You don’t get it. He won’t chew on it, he’ll just swallow it.”
Finally, Mandy admits to dressing the dogs up.

“They’ve worn costumes before. They don’t like it,” Mandy says. “Typically it’s a hot dog. Classic. They’ve been a referee. I think I got Charlie a devil costume once.”
Name a more iconic duo than Charlie and Murphy? I’ll wait.
