Despite strong underlying numbers, Jakub Vrana was benched by Barry Trotz last week for being in “participation mode.”
Since then, The V has gotten involved, tallying three points in his last two games. That includes tonight’s two-goal outburst against the Ottawa Senators.
Vrana’s first goal came on some hard work in front of the net, while the other was some magical sharpshooting. Both had superb celebrations though.

After winning a puck battle at their offensive blue line, TJ Oshie found Evgeny Kuznetsov with a beautiful passing play in front of the net. Kuznetsov couldn’t score, but Vrana cleaned up the trash to give the Caps a 1-0 lead.
“First period we had some momentum,” Vrana said. “This was a good passing play by Kuz and Osh just try to go to net. I got a little bit of lucky bounce, but I cleaned up and I was happy about it.
He sure was.

Vrana’s second goal came after he caught Senators goaltender Craig Anderson leaning. The Czech winger snuck a shot over Anderson’s right shoulder. The accuracy was so perfect, the puck got caught in the netting and disappeared under Anderson’s Gatorade bottle.
For about 10 seconds, no one on the ice knew where the puck went until an official pointed at the net and signaled that the puck went in.
Watch Vrana’s reaction as he finds out he scored.
And here’s the other angle.
Vrana now has ten points through 22 games this season.
