A day after being named the NHL’s third star of the week, Braden Holtby just received another prestigious honor. Forbes Magazine named the Capitals goaltender to its 30 Under 30 Sports list. Holtby is one of only three hockey players to be included – PK Subban and Hillary Knight were the others.
According to Forbes, the players named to the list are young athletes who are “winning on and off the field.” Clippers owner Steve Ballmer, gold-medal winning gymnast Simone Biles, and US women’s national team player Alex Morgan were the judges.
Forbes further explained how it came up with the list in a feature about Julio Jones.
This is the seventh year of our 30 Under 30 list. To curate the best game-changers out there, we foraged through nearly 100 online submissions and relied on our own reporting to generate a list of nearly 50 candidates. We shipped these candidates out to our three judges to determine who made the final cut. Our judges for this year were Steve Ballmer, Simone Biles and Alex Morgan — Biles and Morgan being alumni of the list themselves.
Holtby, 28, is a two-time all-star and the winner of the 2016 Vezina trophy, which is awarded to the NHL’s best goaltender. Last week, Holtby became the second fastest goaltender to win 200 games. The Lloydminster, Saskatchewan-native has also dedicated much of his time off the ice to help show support to the LGBTQ community in the Washington DC area.
Holtby has walked in the Capital Pride Parade for the last two years. Last season, the Holtbeast was named the Capitals’ LGBTQ inclusion ambassador where he served as a leader in the locker room and in the community on diversity, equality, and inclusion.
Last May, Holtby received the DC Pride Ally Award for his work.
