We all know Auston Matthews is good at hockey. During his NHL debut against the Ottawa Senators last year, he scored four goals in one game. Matthews’s teary-eyed mother wasn’t the only one feeling heavy emotions that night.
Craig Anderson, who was the Senators goaltender that evening, probably would have chosen to be anywhere else but in that net by the end of that game.
“During a certain point in my head during that game, I’m like…get me outta here,” Anderson reminisced to Sportsnet Canada last week.
Anderson gave Matthews a debut to remember, but he didn’t leave empty handed either. After the game, Matthews gave Anderson a very sassy gift in return.
Craig Anderson had Matthews sign his goalie stick after his 4 goal debut last season. What did Auston write?
"Thanks FOUR making my first game memorable"

“I was fortunate enough to get him to sign my goalie stick from that night,” Anderson said. “He made a nice little caption on it. It makes me giggle every time I look at it. It said, ‘Thanks “FOUR,’ in quotations with F O U R, ‘for making my first game memorable’ or something like that. It’s neat.”
I love it.
Anderson did rebound his season after taking some time off to care for his wife as she beat cancer.
We all know what happened with Matthews. He won the Calder Trophy and almost helped push the Leafs past the Capitals in the first round of the playoffs.
