Last weekend, Alex Ovechkin and Nastya Ovechkina got married in a lavish wedding at Barvikha Luxury Village, just outside of Moscow. Famous Russian musicians performed in front of a guest list that included some of the biggest names in hockey. During the reception, host Nikolay Baskov read a telegram that Russian President Vladimir Putin sent to congratulate the young couple. Putin then called the Ovechkins to wish them well.
But that wasn’t all. Putin also sent the Ovechkins a wedding gift.

Two days after the festivities ended, Ovechkina posted an Instagram story that showed off photos of the gifts they received. Ovechkina then revealed the President’s gift: a tea set accompanied by a congratulatory note.
“Congratulations on your marriage,” Putin wrote in an official letter. “I wish the young family which united today Alexander Ovechkin and Anastasia Shubskaya prosperity, luck, and the accomplishment of plans. Have as many happy bright and happy days as possible. Let love and understanding always rule in your home. Be healthy, successful, and all the best.”
Putin and the politically “neutral” Ovechkin are longtime friends. Over the last several years, Putin has been condemned internationally for annexing Crimea, propping up the Assad regime, and interfering in the United States’ 2016 presidential election.
