Report: Nicklas Backstrom to participate in IIHF World Championship

during the Men’s Ice Hockey Preliminary Round Group C game on day eight of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics at Shayba Arena on February 15, 2014 in Sochi, Russia.

Marcus Johansson and Alex Ovechkin might be too banged up, but Capitals center Nicklas Backstrom is headed to the IIHF World Championship in France and Germany. Jonathan Lindqvist, an NHL correspondent for the ViaSat broadcasting network, broke the news on Twitter.

Translated, Lindquist says, “I just heard Nicklas Backstrom is going to the World Championships. Not bad.”

When asked to confirm, Backstrom said in a text to Per Bjurman that “nothing has been decided yet” officially.

Backstrom led the Caps in playoff points, scoring six goals and seven assists in 13 playoff games.
