A well-timed salve for the emotionally fragile Caps fans who cannot endure a bit of adversity during a road trip late in a historically dominant season, John Carlson just scored a goal.
And it was on the powerplay too. Will wonders never cease!

Nicklas Backstrom escaped a fray along the boards, moved just south of the goal line, then sent the puck back to the slot. There Carlson corraled it, pondered for a moment the relative suffering of fans bemoaning a season that might not — to the horror of all — reach 110 standings points and a second consecutive Presidents’ Trophy, then he fired it.
The puck went into the net, which is what a goal is.
With that the Caps have ended the Ducks’ shutout bid, and all of sudden this isn’t so hopeless anymore.
