Thursday night, Flames forward Matthew Tkachuk became the newest hockey unicorn when Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk’s stick slid up in his visor.
The play happened in the second period when Tkachuk was being pushed down to his knees after playing the puck off the wall. Galchenyuk came over to the corner to gain possession of the puck, but gained possession of Tkachuk’s helmet instead.
Galchenyuk did not let go of his stick and Tkachuk wasn’t sure what to do. Unlike when Beagle skated back to the bench twirling the stick around like a magical unicorn, Tkachuk unlatched his helmet and slid it off while the stick was still attached.
When the cameras panned back to the Canadiens bench, a girl was caught cupping her hands in the shape of a heart behind Galchenyuk. I don’t think Tkachuk was feeling the same way.
Tkachuk now joins Jay Beagle in the hockey unicorn squad. Beags became hockey’s version of a mythological creature during the second round of last year’s playoffs. Kris Letang’s stick got caught in Beagle’s visor.
It was the first and only time Beagle has been featured on The Today Show.
