We’ve all known for years that Nicklas Backstrom is one of the best of the best. Still, it’s always nice when others recognize it too.
WinnersView did just that when they released a video explaining how Backstrom leads all players in the NHL in power play assists (per 60) since the 2012-2013 season. That’s four seasons of consistently kicking butt.
In the video, WinnersView analyzes exactly how Backstrom has been so productive for the Caps when up a man.
While Backstrom often seems to be relegated to Ovechkin’s shadow, WinnersView is quick to point out that only 26% of his assists are cross-ice to the Ovi spot.
It’s no surprise that Backstrom is ranked so well, especially when you consider the amazing season he’s had so far. Just this season, Backstrom has reached multiple milestones. In January he became the 139th fastest player in NHL history to reach 500 assists. Just a month later, he became the eighth-fastest active player to register 700 career points and only the fourth in Caps’ history to ever do so.
But he’s not just excelling when it comes to milestones. Backstrom currently sits among many of the top players in the NHL in a variety of statistics. He’s third in the NHL for assists, just one behind Ottawa’s Erik Karlsson.
He’s tied for fifth in most number of point.
He’s also in a three-way tie for third with Victor Hedman and Brayden Schenn for most power play points.
Backstrom’s consistency when it comes to being one of the top point producers in the league is inarguable.
