Sunday night, something incredibly awkward occurred at the 89th Academy Awards.
In the spirit of Steve Harvey, presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway were given the wrong card before announcing the night’s final award for Best Picture. La La Land was erroneously declared winner, and what resulted was catastrophically uncomfortable.

As the cast and crew of La La Land were literally escorted back off the stage, an Academy representative was compelled to wave the correct card in the direction of the cameras to verify the actual Best Picture recipient, Moonlight.

Naturally, the internet wasted no time in responding with a deluge of memes to make light of the error. One Caps fan was inspired to create his own, Capitals-themed version of the new Oscar-card meme, and it quickly went viral.

The creators behind La La Land must have felt a sense of disappointment known all too well by Caps fans. Coping with the annual premature playoff exits through memes has become a common tactic among many of us. Only by laughing at the situation can we really move on when, like the makers of La La Land tonight, we’re abruptly pushed out of the spotlight at the time we think we deserve it most.
