On Monday, TJ Oshie was reunited with his Wish Kid, eight-year-old Addy Flint, during Make-A-Wish Mid-Atlantic’s Wish Upon a Par charity event organized by Erin Orpik. TJ and Addy first met in November when the Capitals hosted Hockey Fights Cancer Awareness Night. The two have remained close friends ever since.
On Monday, we gave Addy an opportunity to interview TJ and it turned out about as adorable as you could imagine.
Addy: “If you could be any animal, what would you be? ”
TJ Oshie: “If I could be any animal…I would be a monkey, because they always look like they are having fun and I think that’s a pretty good way to go about things.”
Addy: “If you couldn’t be a hockey player, what would you do?”
TJ Oshie: “If I couldn’t be a hockey player, I would be a stay-at-home dad because you don’t want to miss any moments with your kids.”
RMNB: “How did you get so good at the shootout?”
TJ Oshie: “I practiced the shootout my whole life, not really knowing I was practicing it. I was just having fun going one-on-one with the goalie and it ended up working out for me in the end.”
RMNB & TJ: “Do you have any other questions?”
Addy: “Not really.”
TJ Oshie: “No? That’s it?”
RMNB: “How fun was it when you guys met each other for the first time?”
Addy: “Uhhh, it was REALLY fun.”
TJ Oshie: “It WAS really fun. You learned how to skate, right?”
Addy: “Yeah.”
TJ Oshie: “What else did we do? We fell.”
Addy: “Yeah, [laughs] a lot.”
TJ Oshie: “That wasn’t fun. You got pretty good by the end, though. ”
Addy: “Yeah.”
TJ Oshie: “Hockey fan now.”
RMNB: “Yeah, forever!”
Addy was diagnosed at age four with stage IV metastatic cancer, where cancer grew as a tumor on her kidney. During her long hospital visits, chemotherapy, and radiation treatments, Addy would spend hours drawing and practice singing and dancing. Make-A-Wish would later grant Addy a wish, which was to become a pop star and star in her own music video (“Roar” by Katy Perry).
Addy’s music video received 14 million views (which is 12.7 million views than all of RMNB’s YouTube videos combined), garnering a response from Katy Perry herself.
BIGGEST Happy birthday to my FAVORITE pop star, ADDY! LOVED your music video! You're an inspiration 🎤 @MakeAWish 🎂🎁🎉

A year later at age five, Addy beat cancer and has been in remission ever since.
Addy first met TJ Oshie on November 4th at Kettler Capitals Iceplex after the organization invited approximately 30 Wish Kids to meet their assigned players. Oshie went down to one knee to chat.

The next night, Addy attended the Caps game. During warm-ups, Addy met five-year-old Maeve, Nicklas Backstrom’s Wish Kid. The two new friends freaked out when Tom Wilson waved to them through the glass.
Before the game started, Addy joined the team on the ice for the national anthem, holding hands with Alex Ovechkin.
Later, during the game, Addy was interviewed by CSN Mid-Atlantic’s Jill Sorenson and asked about her new favorite player.
“[TJ] is super nice,” Addy said. “It was a dream come true to meet him. I mean, it was amazing.”
Oshie scored a goal a minute later (for Addy, of course).
Since then, the two have become friends off the ice. In February, Addy met up with Oshie at Kettler and presented him with cards and toys for his oldest daughter, Lyla.
Lyla recorded an adorable video thanking Addy.

Oshie taught Addy how to properly swing a golf club. Oshie seemed happier when Addy was around.
Tx for the golf lessons @TJOshie77, & teaching me that being clever and present with family are the most important values! @laurencosgrove3 pic.twitter.com/4iEhhZJIjs

Wednesday afternoon, I asked Addy how much she loved hockey now.
“More than ever!” she responded. “I love being out with TJ.”
