Baltimore Orioles’s outfielder Adam Jones lives by the mantra “Stay Hungry.” That’s why I’m guessing the five-time all-star just took on a new job during the baseball offseason. He has to put more food on the table.
Friday, the AHL’s San Diego Gulls announced that Jones, a giant hockey fan who graduated from Morse High School in California, has been hired as an off-ice official for a game.
“I’m living out my dream joining the San Diego Gulls,” Jones said in a statement. He will serve as a penalty box attendant.
According to the team, Jones’ responsibilities encompass keeping track of and recording all penalties and all penalty situations, opening and closing the penalty box doors allowing players to enter and exit, and providing referees with official game pucks as necessary.
Jones will make his first and only appearance as a hockey official Friday, January 20, against the San Jose Burracuda.
The San Diego Gulls announced today that the American Hockey League (AHL) club has hired Baltimore Orioles All-Star outfield Adam Jones as an off-ice official for its game Friday, Jan. 20 (7 p.m.) vs. the San Jose Barracuda at Valley View Casino Center.
“I’m living out my dream joining the San Diego Gulls to be an off-ice official and serve as a penalty box attendant,” said Adam Jones of the Baltimore Orioles.
Jones, an eleven-year Major League Baseball (MLB) veteran with Baltimore (2008-present) and Seattle (2006-07), was born and raised in San Diego. Jones is a five-time American League All-Star, four-time gold glove winner and a 2013 Silver Slugger Award winner. The San Diego native has collected 1,480 career hits, 225 home runs, 742 runs batted in (RBI) and earned a career .277 batting average.
Jones attended Morse High School in San Diego where he batted .406 his senior season and was subsequently selected in the first round of the 2003 MLB Draft by the Seattle Mariners.
A current season ticket holder of the San Diego Gulls, Jones is an avid fan of hockey. Jones recently participated in, and won, a silent auction for Gulls forward Jordan Samuels-Thomas’ game-worn camouflage jersey from Military Weekend during San Diego’s Nov. 12 game.
“We are thrilled to welcome Adam Jones to be a part of the San Diego Gulls organization,” said Matt Savant, Gulls President of Business Operations. “It’s exciting to add a five-time MLB All-Star to our staff and we know he will bring a hard-working and winning mentality to our hockey club.”
As part of his new role as an off-ice official, Jones will serve as a penalty box attendant. His main responsibilities encompass keeping track of and recording all penalties and all penalty situations, opening and closing the penalty box doors allowing players to enter and exit, and providing referees with official game pucks as necessary.
So if this whole baseball thing doesn't work out … https://t.co/ycejn9v4Gy

Jones goes to a lot of Gulls games as is. I'll only be jealous if he gets to ride the Zamboni because that's high on my own bucket list.
